The Kipling Project

Welcome to The Kipling Project, the digi-journal of my newest hobby project. Who am I? Shelby Loebker, giant nerd, full-time book lover, and occasional wearer of pants. I’m a writer and editor working on the last year of my B.F.A. What am I doing? I’m diving into book restoration, because I was recently lucky enough to stumble upon some old, and hopefully rare or at least somewhat collectible (?), books.

Here’s how it went down:

My family is really involved with the local public library, and were volunteering to help organize a new annex. They went through all of the old books in storage, many of which were thrown away, while others were sold in book sales or simply returned to storage. Basically they got first pick at the cream of the crop, meaning I got first pick at the cream of the crop.

I didn’t plan on…

Fake Friday Post

Just to confirm that I am alive and I survived the quarter and I will be back to my regular schedule by Monday!

XX. Shelby Jo

Happy Holidays!

I couldn’t get myself together enough for a real post today (which clearly has nothing to do with the fact that I’ve seen The Force Awakens three times), and this Friday is Christmas, so this is the last you will be hearing from me for a little while!

I hope you have a wonderful holiday season, regardless of what you celebrate or whether you celebrate anything at all. Spend time with the people you love, and let them know you love them.

Starting Over (ish?)

I’m baaaack! That’s right, y’all. I survived high school (the greater miracle being that I managed to remember my site password). And I have decided to return to the place where the horrific realities of my high school persona are immortalized…why? Well, because it turns out that college really isn’t that different. The people, the classes, and my lifestyle are roughly the same as they had been for the last four years. So far, things haven’t magically happened, so it’s time I started making them happen.

I gave up my wild fantasies of becoming a fashion designer because I decided that the fashion industry really wasn’t an environment that was conducive to Shelby-ing. Rather, I am focusing my efforts solely on writing. I’m attending the Savannah College of Art and Design as a writing major, and, well, the verdict is still out on that one.

SO, naturally, this blog is going to undergo a few renovations. For starters, it’s going to exist. Like wow, that’s new. Secondly, I’ll be posting a minimum of once a week (Monday, to be exact), but without a specific theme or guide for content. There’s going to be some writing, some lifestyle, some personal, some fandom, and probably a good amount of stuff that makes no sense. And, because of that, I’m going to work on syncing all of my social media accounts to represent the same general image for the blog and for myself. Mostly, what that means is there is going to be some interaction and overlap with Tumblr and (maybe?) Twitter (I’m so torn send help), and that the blog Pinterest will be no more (ironically, it got its first follower like a week ago. TYPICAL).  But my hope is that you are able to choose what type of content you like to see from me, and follow an account that specializes in that medium. Because let’s be real, no one wants to follow 5000+ accounts and see what I post 5000+ times.

Please bear with me during this weird transition phase as I get everything sorted out and get the sites cleaned up. (Also, please feel free weigh in! I need all the help I can get.) I just want to create something that is constructive for me; enjoyable to you; and a creative, positive force floating in the vastness of internet insanity. I’m known for setting simple, attainable goals, no need to complement. *blushes sarcastically*

So, if you’re reading this, thanks for having eyeballs and stick around! It’s about to get real.

My Messenger Bag

Okay. I love stuff. I can’t go anywhere without a book, a notebook, brick-like phone, fat (but somehow still poor) wallet, earbuds and ipod, probably two pairs of sunglasses, and like forty different lip products. And, thus, I have fallen into The Purse Dilemma.

I hate carrying a purse; it’s obnoxious and it never holds all of my stuff anyway! About a year ago, I realized I would have to give in and find a purse I liked, so I set out to create a purse that was perfect for my storage, and my personality.

This was the result:

I was lucky enough to be able to make this completely out of scrap fabric. It's about 12'' wide and deep, made out of double layered canvas with a cotton lining.

The tribal print is hand painted, a project to which I devoted my entire spring break. (While re-watching every Vlogbrothers video. Ever. Buuuutttt, that’s another Dilemma for another time)

Both the paint and canvas have proven to be waterproof, and seem to have stood up to the sun, too.

This is the print in full; that awkward gap is a pocket ;)

Audiobook Sync

With this post, I wanted to spread the word about Audiobook Sync! This is a great organization designed to provide free audiobooks throughout the summer, catering to youth and adults alike. They pair a contemporary YA title alongside a classic title following similar themes or ideas and make them available to download only for a week, but to keep forever. Each week they provide a new pair for download, completely free. Check out the schedule here – the 2014 selection looks fantastic!

The dowloads start today and continue through August 20th. The files are available in MP3 format only, and require a download of Overdrive Media Console first, which is available on practically all desktop or mobile platforms.

This is a fantastic resource that its guarunteed to spice up any summer. I found it late last year, and I’m definitely downloading every title this year. Trust me, if you haven’t discovered your love for audiobooks yet, now is the time!
