Friday Favorites 12/11/15

Welcome to Friday!! Huzzah for the weekend if you have a job, continue eating ice cream and chipping away at your life’s savings if you don’t have a job or a life or are basically otherwise me.

This post almost didn’t happen because, as if I was not already stir crazy, I CAN’T GET WIFI ON MY LAPTOP AND HAVEN’T BEEN AT HOME WHERE I CAN USE ETHERNET. Windows must have gone AWOL and be flailing its genitalia about and having a wild time somewhere because it ain’t doin’ diddly ’round here!

#1). This image set from Pinterest got me weak. I used to be on the Teen Titans GO hate train because it seemed like the thing for proper DC fans to do, but now that I have actually seen the show (Cartoon Network plays nonstop at SCAD) I understand the hatred.Teen Titans

#2). THE GAME OF THRONES SEASON 6 TEASER. LIKE HOLY MARKETING BATMAN. I recently watched all of Game of Thrones and the obsession is still very fresh and very real.

#3). There’s no image for this one, but just the fact that the The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe movie came out ten years ago, on December 8th, 2005. I have very vivid memories of my dad taking me and my brothers to see the movie, and in general it is very near and dear to my heart.

Have a lovely and safe weekend!

(Muah ah ah ah ahhhh)

(jk lol)

Sorry for going radio silent this weekend! I got caught up with finals and moving out and couldn’t queue up a Friday post. But now I’m HOMMEEEEEE and I’ve ridden my horsies and eaten ice cream every day and I’m so glad to be back.

*ahem* anyyywayyy. This is the part of the outline process that I am slightly concerned about, because I am unsure of how much to reveal on here (because, yes, THE INTERNET IS FOREVER. THANKS MOM).

So, instead, you’re getting the review post intended for last Friday: RWBY Volume 3!

this is happening

Well, for the content of the first 3 episodes, at least.

Context: RWBY is a web-series created by Monty Oum and produced by Rooster Teeth. Mr. Oum suddenly died after the release of Volume 2, putting the future of the show in jeopardy. I discovered and watched the first two volumes of the show over the summer, immediately falling in love and telling everyone I knew to watch it, so I would have people to obsess with. I was so excited when Volume 3 was announced on schedule, despite the loss of Mr. Oum, but then I started to develop some doubts. I loved RWBY when I was binge-watching it, but what if the novelty of the show wore off when I had to wait two weeks to see a new episode? Because of this (and because I am a foolish, competitive human) I ended up making a pact with my brother not to watch any volume 3 content until I came home from SCAD and we could watch it together. I came home. We watched it. And now I’m telling you about it.

Positives: It’s definitely still the same RWBY. The animation is different (better, if you ask me, but it’s hard to adjust to, after seeing the characters move the same way for so long), but the dialogue, pacing, and characters all remain true to the previous seasons. Plenty of new characters are being introduced, and the plot is beginning to thicken. The Vidal Tournament is going to be B A D A S S, and so far I love seeing all the unique fighters and styles.

Negatives: The first two seasons of RWBY consisted of primarily filler/character developing episodes, and then the plot unfolded and climaxed in the last 3 or 4, and it looks like volume three will follow the same pattern. There was a little too much comedy shoved into these particular episodes, or at least it was more of an “in-your-face” style than I prefer. Along those lines, I also feel like the voice acting has taken a step backward. In volume 1 the delivery of practically every line was rushed and amateur, but volume 2 showed a huge improvement in that realm. Unfortunately, now, we’re back to rushed line delivery and exaggerated voices. I attribute this partly to the humor aspect, because the voice actors just have so many jokes to get through in each scene. Finally, there has been absolutely no explanation of the events of the volume 2 finale, and I feel like that is necessary before the plot progresses any further.

Summary: I realize there are a lot more negatives than positives up there, but I have faith in the show, and I think this season has the potential to be the best yet. Plus, I’m ridiculously attached to the characters, so I am probably going to love it no matter what happens. If you haven’t watched RWBY, I highly recommend you do so (on the Rooster Teeth YouTube channel or website), so you can watch the awesomeness as it unfolds.

Friday Favorites 11/13/15

Ohhhh, the fact that I’m starting this series on Friday the 13th simultaneously makes me want to cry and fist pump. MAKE OF THAT WHAT YOU WILL.

Favorite #1: This image set from Tumblr. I love Maggie Stiefvater and consider The Scorpio Races to be my favorite contemporary novel, andddd it’s Scorpio month, so there had to be at least one TSR related item here.

Scorpio FF 11.13 pt. 1 Scorpio FF 11.13 pt. 2

Favorite #2: This adorable doodle by Cantobear on Tumblr and just the fact that Cassandra Cain is finally in the New 52 in general. I can’t wait for the quarter to end so I can get caught up on all of my comic babies.
Cass - FF 11.13 Favorite #3: This baby discovered on Pinterest. There are no words for how excited I am to see The Force Awakens.

Have a great weekend!

Day 3

Eyyyy! It’s day 3!

I’m working this afternoon, and then going straight to a screening of Youth, a new movie with Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel. I will be writing a review of it for District and, since it already premiered at Cannes, I should be able to post that here, also. I’ll be honest and say this wasn’t one of my first choices of films to see, (I wish I had known more about the festival when I bought my tickets, but there wasn’t a lot of information about the process, again, typical SCAD) (lol you’re going to hear my complain about this a lot), but of course I’m excited to see it!

Here’s the trailer for the film, which looks very much like it’s going to be a thematic piece, but also that it’s beautifully shot. Can’t wait to tell you more!

Day 2

It’s only day 2 and I’ve already failed to post daily :””””(

BUT I’m going to get caught up today.

So Saturday was fantastic! I worked my first shift, which involved getting to see Olivia Wilde looking like her perfect self and totally owning our dinky “red carpet.” And then I ran into Chris Evans on the way home, just randomly on the street. He’s filming here, not technically attending the festival, but I’m still holding out hope that he decides to make an appearance one night!

Yesterday everything escalated by about x17. Unfortunately the panel I was supposed to attend was cancelled because the speaker, Jason Fuchs, was sick. I’m pretty disappointed, because I had only planned to attend two events, and now I’m down to one.

But I ended up working about 10 hours all in all yesterday, because we were so busy. We showed Brooklyn, which has yet to premier (I only got to see about twenty minutes of it, but it’s going to be great. Go see it.), so security was really tight, and the crowds were really excited. In addition, Saoirse Ronan, the star of the film and like a zillion others, came to participate in a panel discussion afterwards. I was up close and personal during her time on the “red carpet” (I’m working on a witty name for it, bear with me), and she is gorgeous and adorable and oh so talented.

All in all, I think the week is going to be really rewarding, but it’s definitely frustrating for me because of the lack of organization amongst the volunteers (typical SCAD, but I’m still not used to it, and I probably never will be). Not to mention exhausting, it’s only been two days and I already skipped a class! D: (Nerds like me will know that I really feel like quite a rebel, even though all I did was sleep.)

xx. Shelby Jo (I’m still giggling because this makes me feel like Gossip Girl. I may come up with a better send off, and I may just love this one a little to much.)

And So It Begins…

#SAVFF 2015 starts TODAY!

Tickets, tho

planner, tho

acne tho

On second thought…

SO I’M REALLY EXCITED!  My first shift is ushering tonight at 8, and hopefully it will be great time, because I have 7 more to go… >_>… I know, no one to blame but myself…

*Side note* I find it pretty cool/ironic that RWBY Volume 3 and Supergirl both premier this week! It’s a pretty cool bonus 🙂 (EXCEPT I RASHLY MADE A PACT NOT TO WATCH VOLUME 3 UNTIL THANKSGIVING BREAK WHEN MY BROTHER AND I COULD WATCH IT TOGETHER SEND HELP)

I can’t wait to share this week with you!

xx. Shelby Jo

Update on all things Shelbs! Some mildly exciting things may be happening soon!

  1. SCAD’s 18th annual Savannah Film Festival will be coming around October 24th-31st, and I am volunteering! I’m just doing grunt work this year, ushering and working concessions, but hopefully it will lead to some adventures this year and more involved roles in years to come! SO, to celebrate and include you all in that experience, I will be  blogging everyday for the 8 days that the festival will be in Savannah! I am not working and/or attending every single day, so I’m not quite sure what posts on off days will entail, but maybe photo blogs or something along those lines.
  2. I am officially a staff writer for the SCAD online newspaper, SCAD District! I’ll be sharing some of my more interesting contributions here as well (including reviews from Film Fest!), but take a peek at the website every once in a while and be on the look out for my byline!
  3. I have officially survived my first college midterm week yayyyyyyyy congratulation meeeeee

I can’t wait to share #savff with you, and I hope it’s at least somewhat as exciting as I envision!
